She’s only seven years old, but Olivia Tyler isn’t letting that stop her from hitting the streets to help protect Chicago’s homeless from COVID-19. She’s been giving away masks to the city’s homeless population since April and she’s even launched her own nonprofit,Olivia Dru Cares.
The soon-to-be third-grader got involved after she learned about the statewide order requiring face masks in public places. She wondered how homeless people would get face coverings, so she decided to do something to help them. Olivia bought some face masks and sold some to members of their church for $5 and for every sale she made, she could donate another mask to people living on the streets.
Now Olivia is making her own masks and she’s donated more than 800 so far. She likes making personal deliveries through tent cities and encampments with her parents to give the masks away. “It makes me feel happy to give people something that protects them from getting sick,” she says.
