If you based your decision on having a dog or cat on how long you would have them, no one would have a dog!
Many good boys live 15+ years! Some, barely 6. Adopt and older or abused good boy or girl, maybe you get a few months.
I'm not ready yet having only lost my Charlie April 14th, but someday...
