Casino Plans Concern Open Door Mission

The CEO of an Omaha metro homeless shelter continues to be concerned with plans to build a casino in Carter Lake, Iowa.  The plan is for the gambling facility plus a hotel to go up near Abbott Dr. and Ave. H.

Open Door Mission CEO Candace Gregory says, "because of our proximity to the location, it's going to be clearly accessible to those with highly addictive behaviors."

Gregory points out the Open Door Mission would be within walking distance of the casino/hotel.  She also says the homeless are more vulnerable to problem gambling than the general population.

Gregory asks, "Isn't there a better location that this could attract recreational and social gamblers without such a highly vulnerable population within walking distance?"

The casino will be owned and operated by the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
