Grandpa Thwarts Lincoln Kidnapping Attempt

A Lincoln grandfather is being credited with returning his grandson after a woman attempted to kidnap him.

Around 12:30 Saturday afternoon, the Lincoln Police were called to the Deluxe Inn near 48th and Cornhusker Highway for a report of an attempted kidnapping. A 25 year old woman told officers she was gathering her children to leave the hotel and her two year old was seated on the ground just outside of the hotel room, near the family.

The woman says that is when 54 year old Sherry Gilbert, who was staying in a nearby hotel room, picked the toddler up and went back into her hotel room. The child's mother and her father knocked on the Gilbert’s door but she refused to open the door, making statements indicating she believed the boy was her child.

The child’s grandfather eventually kicked the door open and took the child from Gilbert. The toddler was unharmed and returned to his mother.

Gilbert was arrested for kidnapping. The investigation is ongoing but police say it appears to be an isolated incident and mental health issues may have been a factor.
