Papillion Animal Rescue Saves 17 Texas Dogs Slated To Be Euthanized

Seventeen dogs are now safe from being euthanized thanks to the volunteers at the Town & Country Humane Society in Papillion.

The seventeen pups had a long journey from an overpopulated kill shelter in Texas, but now they will find their fur-ever homes here in Nebraska.

Volunteer coordinator Craig Denherder says these dogs could have had a very different outcome in life. "The shelter they came from is a high volume-low demand shelter. They had over 400 dogs, and were overpopulated. So by sending them dogs here, where it's no-kill, we were their last chance of finding a forever home. If we wouldn't have stepped up, these dogs probably wouldn't be here today."

Denherder says a lot of work goes in to making sure the dogs are healthy before going home with their new owners. "About two thirds of our cost is utilities and vetting and we don't get any money from the county, state or federal funding." Before going to their new homes, all animals are treated for any health conditions, micro-chipped and spayed or neutered.

Although those who work at the shelter don't collect a tangible paycheck, Denherder says they still get paid. "None of us are paid, so every time we see a dog go home, that's our payday. Finally get to see the dog go to the right home, it's just rewarding knowing that you gave a dog a second chance to find its forever home."
