Steve Winwood opened up about the loss of his former Traffic bandmate, Dave Mason, who died on April 19 at the age of 79.

"We were deeply saddened to hear of Dave's passing," the "Higher Love" singer captioned an Instagram post on Wednesday (April 23) featuring a throwback photo of the late rocker. "Dave played an important role in shaping the band's sound and identity. His songwriting, musicianship and distinctive spirit helped create music that has lasted far beyond its era and continues to mean so much to listeners around the world. His place in that history will always be remembered, and through the music, his presence endures."

Mason and Winwood co-founded the band back in 1967, along with Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Mason, who wrote the British rock group's biggest hit, "Hole in My Shoe," was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024 for his contributions.

A spokesperson for Mason's family confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday (April 23) that the musician passed away at his home in Gardnerville, Nev.

After the band split, Mason would go on to record with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Meanwhile, Winwood launched a successful solo career in the 1980s, crafting hits such as "Valerie," "Higher Love" and "Back in the High Life Again."
