A 95-Year-Old Man Reaches 100K-Mile Bicycling Goal

Back in 1991,Bob Mettauer retired from his job with the telephone company and started riding his bike more. The California man liked it so much, he set a goal of reaching 100-thousand miles on his bike. He’s kept at it, earning the nickname “Bicycle Bob” and after 28 years, he just reached that goal.

The 95-year-old World War II veteran just celebrated his 100-thousand miles and was cheered on by dozens of his neighbors in Santa Maria, California. He rides nearly every day and while he’s not riding 20 miles a day like he did as a younger man, Bob still gets in nine miles or so daily. And now that he’s reached his 100-thousand-mile goal, he still plans to ride, but he’s setting a new goal.

“I'm going to be 96 in the next month,” Bicycle Bob explains. “My goal now is to stay alive for a while.”
