A refrigerator full of food is now sitting outside on a street corner in Milwaukee and everything inside is free for anyone in need. It’s called the Milwaukee Community Fridgeand it was installed by residents Hataya Johnson and Sarah Tramonte to help fight hunger where people need it most.
The northside neighborhood of the city where the fridge sits is home to the Tandem restaurant and its owner, Caitlin Cullen, let them set the fridge up and plug it in, free of charge. Cullen says the neighborhood is at least 40% below the poverty level and that’s why the women chose that location.
“It’s just such a diverse group coming to benefit, old and young, all different ethnicities,” Johnson explains. “It’s been really, really amazing to see.”
