A soldier has been reunited with a dog she fell in love with while serving overseas. Sergeant Erin Guthrie was deployed in Kosovo with the Oregon Army National Guard when she noticed a stray dog that she had an “instant connection” with. The 28-year-old was there for eight months and seeing the dog helped her deal with being so far from home and brought her a sense of peace.
When she returned home, she considered getting a dog, but she knew the dog she really wanted was the one in Kosovo, who she named Meeka, is short for Mikeshia, which means friendship or brotherhood in Albanian. Guthrie reached out to a group, Paws of War, which helped raise money and manage obstacles to get Meeka to the U.S. to be Guthrie’s pet. They were reunited this week and she says it’s “an amazing feeling” and his tail wags seem to agree.
