School Receives $200K Donation For Accessible Playground

An anonymous donor has given $200-thousand to a Minnesota elementary school so they can build a wheelchair accessible playground. The able-bodied students at Glen Lake Elementary in Hopkins, Minnesota, didn’t like that their classmates in wheelchairs couldn’t play on the playground with them, so they started a fundraiser to raise $300-thousand to install a wheelchair accessible playground at the school.

After their fundraising efforts were covered on local news, an anonymous donor stepped forward to help. At an impromptu disco party in the school’s cafeteria earlier this week, Glen Lake’s principal Jeff Radel paused his DJing duties to make an announcement. An anonymous fellow Minnesotan who also has accessibility challenges had seen the news that the students were working hard to raise money for their new inclusive playground and sent the school a check for $200-thousand.

All the students were super excited by the news, not just the eight students who use wheelchairs. "I am excited for the wheelchair friends to be able to just have fun on a playground because they haven't been able,” explains student Shujaa Kutto. “They've just had to sit out and just watch, and just watch the fun happen." The donation allows the project to proceed to phase one and some of the accessible equipment can be ordered. The students are so pumped about their success that they’ve already decided to keep on fundraising after they meet their goal so they can build an even bigger playground.
